Faced with increasing pressures to make the most of finite (or even reduced) resources, successful organizations are recognizing the key role that professional facility management plays in securing a return on the original investment. UW's web-based Certificate Program in Facility Management provides a solid foundation in facility management principles and practices in a format that allows talented individuals to stay on the job while they learn.

Life cycle cost analysis, value engineering, energy efficiency, sustainability and green design, security issues, emergency preparedness and disaster recovery – these are only a few of the startling range of facilities issues confronting many chief financial officers today. This award winning program addresses these and other issues through dynamic and interactive course materials that draw on a variety of media (video, print, web and e-mail). Participants learn proven techniques for improving safety and efficiency, for protecting and enhancing a facility's value, and creating a people-friendly work environment that improves personal productivity.

Although not a substitute for the credentials offered through the International Facility Management Association, this online program – based on IFMA core competencies – enables individuals to prepare for accelerated achievement of IFMA credentials: Facility Management Professional (FMP) and Certified Facility Manager (CFM).

Program instructors are acknowledged authorities in their fields and experienced teachers who share their career experiences with students. Professionals who wish to enhance their skills but cannot commute weekly to a classroom will find the online format perfectly suited to their schedules.

Those who have already earned the CFM credential from the International Facility Management Association may earn certification maintenance points by successfully completing specific courses marked with this symbol: (see course descriptions).

How Online Learning Works

Classes in this certificate program are delivered online via the World Wide Web, which means you don't need to come to campus to earn your certificate: You can study from anywhere. To access your course materials, you'll simply log on to the Internet. You'll use e-mail and online discussion boards to communicate with your instructors and other students. The online learning program includes multiple instructional tools to provide a varied and engaging learning environment – print materials, audio and video recordings, graphics, interactive animations, and a host of Web-based resources.

Just like in a classroom course, in these "group-start" online courses, students begin each course at the same time and work through the coursework together. To participate, you'll need a computer with access to the Web (see technology requirements). After you are accepted and enrolled in a course, you will be mailed instructions on how to access your classes.

This format addresses the same practical content areas and competencies prioritized by the International Facility Management Association and other professional organizations. By the end of the program, participants develop knowledge and expertise not only in facility management, but also with technologies and tools that will help them excel in the workplace of the future.
